Pres. Bongbong Marcos Speaks on Mandatory ROTC for Students in Senior High School
BONGBONG MARCOS – The President expressed his desire for the reinstitution of the Reserved Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) for senior high school students.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has started his 6-year term. Last June 30, he took his oath as the 17th president of the Republic of the Philippines. He won a landslide victory in the Elections 2022 after getting 31 million votes which gave him a huge gap from his contenders in the presidential race.
Marcos Jr. and his family are staying in Bahay Pangarap. More than a week ago, he tested positive for COVID-19 and had to be in isolation for seven (7) days. Meanwhile, he was closely monitored and he recovered fast from the disease.
The 64-year-old President continued working while in isolation. He joined Cabinet meetings virtually.
Recently, Pres. Bongbong Marcos had his first State of the Nation Address (SONA). One of the concerns of the 64-year-old President is the reinstitution of the mandatory Reserved Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC). Based on a report on GMA News, he wants it reinstituted for senior high school students.
According to Marcos Jr., the aim of reinstituting the ROTC for senior high school students “is to motivate, train, organize, and mobilize the students for national defense preparedness” and as well as disaster preparedness. The mandatory ROTC program was stopped in 2002 following the death of University of Santo Tomas student Mark Wilson Chua who allegedly died in the hands of his ROTC handlers after he claimed about corruption happening inside the organization.
Based on the report, aside from the ROTC, Pres. Marcos also wants the reinstitution of the National Service Training Program (NSTP). He eyes to make ROTC and NSTP mandatory or Grade 11 and Grade 12 students.
