Ah, what would we do without our dads? Whether your dad is your biggest cheerleader and best friend or he’s the strong and silent type who’s a huge softie on the inside, dads are invaluable. They may come across as old-school and baduy some/most of the time, but we still love them and their antics. This Father’s Day, we’ve listed down phrases that you’ll always hear from Pinoy dads.

“Tanong mo muna sa mama mo.”

Whether you’re going out with your friends or special someone, your dad will ALWAYS ask to seek your mom’s approval first. Why? Because he respects your mom’s opinion (and he also doesn’t want to get in trouble with her). But there’s also another way of dealing with mom…

“Ako nang bahala sa mama mo.”

Counterpoint to the statement above. Dads can be strict and overprotective, but when you need a backup to attend get-togethers or night-outs, they can be your best ally against mom’s sermon and quips.

“Ilipat mo sa basketball, manonood ako.”

Basketball is so popular in the Philippines that Pinoy dads wouldn’t dare miss watching a game. It doesn’t matter if you’re watching the latest episode of your favorite series — when dad tells you to switch the channel — do it, or else.

“Pakikuha ‘yung ano…”

We don’t know what they exactly mean by ano, but we always manage to get whatever that thing is. Part of the Pinoy dad magic, perhaps?

“Akin na ‘yung toolbox ko.”

You know things are serious when dads say this line. Legend has it that this toolbox can fix anything at home ASAP. Repair services? We don’t know them.

“Puro ka na lang hingi. Matuto ka magtipid.”

Don’t worry, because dad will still give you the extra cash you’re asking for. He just wants to lecture you first.

“Sinong kasama mo?”

What your dad is actually asking is where are you going; what time you’ll be home; and what are the complete names, numbers, and addresses of the people tagging along with you. At least pinayagan ka…?

“Noong panahon namin *insert throwback childhood stories here.*”

Dads will never run out of stories about their early years. From how they courted your mom to what it feels like to study without the internet, they’ll make sure you hear it on out-of-town trips, during family dinners, while watching TV, you name it!
