During the weekend of Pentecost, the organizers of the Limburg Open organized a very exciting mini match between Jorden van Foreest and Alexei Shirov, which the latter won very convincingly by a 3½-½ score. Crucial were his two wins with black. The first one was particularly impressive, as in the Anti-Moscow Variation of the Slav he crushed Jorden in only 25 moves. Not surprisingly, Shirov called it one of the best games of his career!
In the third game of the match, Shirov returned to his favorite Botvinnik Variation and exploited a miscalculation by his opponent.
