Here’s news that will blow you right back to the early 2000s — the Avril Lavigne banger “Sk8er Boi” is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary. That means it has been two decades since you first put on thick, dark eyeliner that wasn’t even visible since your overgrown bangs covered half your face and jumped around in your room to this song. It also means that the time has come for “Sk8er Boi” to transform from an mp3 to a motion picture. What do we know so far?
“Sk8er Boi” the Movie?
What is “Sk8er Boi” about?
“He was a boy / She was a girl / Can I make it any more obvious? / He was a punk / She did ballet / What more can I say?”
It was the decade’s pop-punk anthem about how if you let society dictate who you should like, you’ll only end up in regret. Avril sings about the titular skater boy who likes a girl that’s the total opposite of him, a ballerina. She liked him too but ended up following the ill advice of her stuck-up friends because “he wasn’t good enough for her.” Apparently, his pants were too baggy. Years later, she’s a single mom and he’s a hotshot superstar musician. Worse, all her friends back then are huge fans of his now.
“You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps, and jocks,” explains the singer during her podcast guesting. “It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love… And it’s like the skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s like too cool for him, but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”
Although the song is just three minutes long, the lyrics already tell a story that could stretch to fit the big screen perfectly. Who knows, it might be the next hit summer rom-com movie.
Why did Avril Lavigne write “Sk8er Boi”?
As for the deeper meaning behind the song, no one truly knows. The bridge reveals that the story is being narrated by Sk8er Boi’s current girlfriend who seems to be gloating over Ballerina Girl’s failed romance and single motherhood. It could be Avril just trying to tell the story of the fictional Sk8er Boi and his failed love or she was actually narrating a real-life experience. Artists are known to do that (read: Taylor Swift). Word on the street is that the story happened IRL but Avril just changed the gender. But another rumor says that it’s actually about Avril’s then-boyfriend, Sum41’s Deryck Whibley, and a girl who wouldn’t go out with him in high school. Whatever it’s about, let’s just thank what inspired Avril since it gave us this banger of a masterpiece.
Not the first attempt at a movie adaptation
If you’re an Avril fan, news about the movie adaptation might not have surprised you. As early as 2003, there were already talks about a “Sk8er Boi” film from Paramount Pictures headed by writer/producer David Zabel (ER) but it was never made. This time, it seems like everything has been given a green light to push through.
Dream cast: Sk8er Boi
Although there are no details yet of when the movie is set for production or release or even who the cast is going to be, we went ahead and speculated. We’re thinking of someone who would look unassuming and plain in baggy pants with a skateboard strapped across their bag while at the same time could transform into a believable rock star. Our bet is on Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard, one of the most sought-after actors these days. Hear us out, we know he was a kid the last time you saw him on the show. But he’s now an 18-year-old adult who is also actually a musician IRL. Finn could pass off as a loser skater boy who later becomes a cool band bro. Another actor in the running could be Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse. Thoughts?
Dream cast: Ballerina Girl
Nobody else is on our mind except for the girl of the hour, Olivia Rodrigo herself. Olivia has had a stellar year where she released her debut album SOUR that won her a number of awards including AMA’s New Artist of the Year. She is also an actress who plays the main role Nini Salazar-Roberts in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Plus, Olivia is just 18 years old, an actual teenager for a teenager role. She could totally do Ballerina Girl justice.

And if you think the pop-punk princess has put down her crown, you couldn’t be more wrong. She just recently released her latest single “Bite Me” which marks her return to the pop-punk scene. The music video shows her with Travis Barker, Blink-182’s drummer. It’s as if decades haven’t gone by since she hit the scene. Avril still looks as young and beautiful as she was back then — complete with her signature eye makeup — with high-energy punk music made for headbanging at gigs.
